REGISTRATION PROCESS:

Registration for the 2010 Corinthians Stonington to Bootghbay Harbor Race - The Lobster Run is now open!

Registrations are being processed on-line through Compete-at.com an automated event manager. Links are provided to guide you to the Registration Set-up.

 

REGISTRATION PREPARATION:

The Skipper will create an account at Compete-at.com which simply consists of your e-mail address and establishing a password. This account is called your "Passport" Account at Compete-At.com.  You may then save a profile, if you wish, to your Passport Account with personal information and details of your boat.  This information will be stored for this race and future events.

The Race Committee and organizers of the race have structured the sign-up to be as easy as possible to use, but still collect all of the required information that we may need to consider in approving particpation in a Category 2 Ocean Race. Preliminary Notice of Race
The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race

Warning Signal:  1100 EDT, 23 July

 

1.  ORGANIZING AUTHORITY AND SPONSORS

The Organizing Authority (“OA” is The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race Organizing Committee of the Corinthians Endowment Fund.)

2. DESCRIPTION

The race will start from a starting line about 1nm east of Watch Hill light and finish in Boothbay Harbor, ME, leaving Nantucket Shoals and associated buoys as described in the Sailing Instructions, to port.  Handicapping distance is approximately 332nm or as specified in the Sailing Instructions.  The starts may be postponed if unusually heavy weather is predicted.  The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race is an ISAF Category 2 race.  The description of this category is for a race of extended duration along or not far removed from shorelines, where a high degree of self-sufficiency is required of the yachts but with the reasonably probability that outside assistance would be available for aid in the event of serious emergencies. 

 

3.  RULES

a.  The Race will governed by:

  • The Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012 (“RRS”)
  • This Notice of Race (“NOR”)
  • The 2010 Corinthians’ Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Sailing Instructions
  • The equipment requirements applicable to a Category 2 race in the 2010-2011

b.  RRS Part 2 will be replaced by Part B, the Steering and Sailing Rules, of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) between the hours of local sunset and local sunrise. 

c.  For purposes of Rule 44 RRS, when an alternative penalty is appropriate, only the Scoring Penalty must be taken.  This changes RRS 44. 

d.  The Sailing Instructions may change any of these documents as permitted by the RRS.  It is the intention of the OA to post the Sailing Instructions on the Race web site by July 1, 2010.   

e.  The Sailing Instructions will permit the Compliance Committee and the Protest Committee to grant time allowances and to assess time penalties in lieu of disqualification. 

f.  The Protest Committee will be appointed by and will report to the Organizing Authority. 

g.  Advertising will be limited to ISAF Category A in accordance with ISAF 20.3.

4.  YACHT ELIGIBILITY AND SAFETY AND                REQUIREMENTS

            4.1  Yachts eligibility

            4.1.1  Yachts must be single-hulled sailing vessels, of not less than 32.0 LOA with inboard auxiliary power manned by a captain and crew (minimum of two) who have demonstrated and documented recent competency in offshore yacht racing or passages.  Moveable ballast or canting keel yachts are not allowed.  Advertising will be restricted to Category A in accordance with ISAF Regulation 20. 

            4.1.2  Yachts must meet the Hull Construction Standards of ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 3.03.1 and 3.03.2.  Substantial compliance with the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Guide for Building and Classing Offshore Racing Yachts is required.  Either an ABS certificate, ABS compliance noted on a rating certificate or a declaration in writing by the designer, builder and where applicable the structural engineer is required.  The Committee may consider the qualification of a yacht by virtue of its offshore history and/or survey. 

      4.2  Crew eligibility and responsibility

            4.2.1  The term Captain as used in this Notice of Race means the person, whether or not the owner of the yacht, who is designated on the entry form as “Captain” and who is the person In Charge of the yacht during the race.  The Captain is responsible for the yacht, its handling and safety, the conduct of the crew before and after, as well as during the race, and compliance with the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions.

            4.2.2  Captains must be current members of US SAILING or their National Authority.

            4.2.3  Completion of an Offshore Experience Form is required for Captain, Navigator and Watch Captains.

            4.2.4  A minimum of 30% of all crew members including at least two (2) of the following(Captain, navigator, port and starboard watch captains) shall have attended a sanctioned Safety at Sea seminar within five (5) years prior to the start of the race.

            4.2.5  All yachts must submit crew lists that include the Captain and all persons aboard while racing.  These must include the ISAF Sailor’s Classification Code for each person aboard.  Except for the owner, only one category 2 or 3 sailor may be aboard a yacht, and that person shall not steer except in a declared emergency situation.  See website for ISAF Regulation 22:  http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/classificationcode-[432].pdf

            4.2.6 An application for entry, available through online link at www.stoningtontoboothbayharbor.com must be completed and submitted no later than May 1 ,2010 requiring full payment in advance. This will also include an offshore experience form for skipper and crew.  A Crew Information and Waiver Form will be part of the on-line Race Entry package. These forms must be completed, signed and returned by each crew member, including the Captain, before an entry is complete. 

            4.3 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

            4.3.1  All yachts shall comply with the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 2010-2011 for Category 2 events, including US SAILING prescriptions.  The requirement of OSR 4.08.4 can be satisfied for this race by current American Red Cross Basic First Aid and CPR certifications.  This is available as an on-line course: (https://www.redcrossonlinetraining.org/Distance/Default.aspx?CID=54 )

            4.3.2  ORR Stability Index (“SI”) shall not be less than 115.0.

            4.3.3  All competing yachts will be issued an I-Track system to provide real-time tracking information throughout the race.   This is a safety item and shall not be disabled or turned off while racing


 

5.  DIVISIONS

      5.1  The Corinthians Race Committee shall have full authority to determine the suitability of any for entry into any division and may divide the division into classes at its discretion. A minimum of five entries is required to constitute a division or a class.

      5.1.2  Yachts will race in one of the following divisions:

            * ORR Racer

           * ORR Cruiser-Racer, no symmetrical spinnaker allowed.  An asymmetrical cruising spinnaker may be carried but can only be tacked on deck or to a permanently mounted bowsprit (no spinnaker pole allowed). 

            * PHRF Racer

            * PHRF Cruiser-Racer, no symmetrical spinnaker allowed.  An asymmetrical cruising spinnaker may be tacked on deck or in a permanently mounted bowsprit, no staysails except those allowed by PHRF NE for cruising.  (Whisker pole no longer than measured “J”).

            * PHRF Cruiser.  Only roller-furler headsails of not more than 135%LP, no spinnakers or staysails.  (Whisker pole no longer than measured “J”)

            * Double-handed

      5.1.2  Yachts racing under ORR must have a valid ORR (Offshore Racing Rule) certificate, based on full or partial measurement.  Handicaps may be obtained directly from US SAILING.  An ORR yacht may elect to compete with or without a spinnaker, which must be reflected in the rating certificate.  In all classes, whisker poles may be no longer than measured “J.” 

      5.1.3  Yachts racing under PHRF must have a current PHRF NE certificate (available online at http://www.phrfne.org ).

      5.1.4  Reserved

      5.1.5  In the ORR Cruiser-Racer, the PHRF Cruiser-Racer and PHRF Cruiser divisions, power winches may be used to hoist and trim sails. This modifies RRS 52.  Note that this does NOT apply to the racing divisions, or double-handed divisions, where RRS 52 remains in force.  Mechanical and electro-mechanical steering devices may be used in the double-handed divisions throughout, and in the cruiser-racer and cruiser divisions if required by safe navigation.  Use must be logged and reported to the RC upon finishing for all but the double-handed use of these devices.   

 

 

6.  MANDATORY

    STONINGTON CHECK-IN

      6.1  Each Captain or his designee (authorized in writing, signed by the Captain) shall report to the Committee Office in Stonington not later than 1700EDT on Thursday, July 22, 2010. 

      6.2  No yacht will be checked in until all required Entry forms have been submitted. 

 

 

7.  RATINGS AND SCORING

      7.1  Valid rating certificates, ORR, PHRF as appropriate, should accompany the Entry Form.  Rating Certificate revisions may be accepted after submission of the Entry Form at the discretion of the Race Committee, if accompanied by a $200 Administrative Late Fee.  No revisions will be accepted after 1700 EDT on Thursday July 22, 2010.

      7.2  The course shall be from a start off Stonington, CT to Boothbay Harbor, ME leaving Nantucket Shoals and designated buoys to port.  Calculated distance is approximately 332nm, subject to correction in the Sailing Instructions.

      7.2.1.  Finish in Boothbay Harbor, Maine between two portable marks placed 75 feet apart set 150 yards off the eastern shore of Burnt Island bearing 107degM from the existing former USCG boathouse situated 100 yards north of Burnt Island Light [Fl R 6s with 2 W sectors] at 43 49.5N, 069 38.4W.

      7.3  Time allowances for ORR yachts will be calculated using ORR’s Performance Curve Scoring.  Time allowances for PHRF yachts will be time on time. Time allowances for Double Handed class will be PHRF yachts time on time.

 

8. SPECIAL LIMITATIONS

      8.1  During the race, contestants may not receive weather, current or navigational information except from a publicized source available to all contestants. 

      8.2  Subscription, password protected or restricted web pages and video images are considered private information and may NOT be used for the transmission or reception of specialized weather and current information. General use of the Internet and publicly available web sites to obtain weather and current information including all National Weather Service data is authorized.  XM and Sirius Weather are specifically authorized in the interests of safety, but weather routing data developed specifically for this Race may not be received while racing. 

 

9.  CAPTAINS’ MEETING

            9.1  The Captains’ Meeting will be held at 1600EDT on Thursday July 22, 2010.  Two (and only two!) crew from each yacht are required to attend the Captains’ Meeting.  Location of the Captains’ Meeting will be provided at the Stonington check-in. 

 

10.  LIABILITY RELEASE

      10.1  The Corinthians, Stonington Yacht Club and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club bear no responsibility for accidents, damage or injuries to yachts or their personnel arising from any cause during the race or related activities.  The Captain’s responsibility is as set out in the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations and as defined on the entry forms. 

 

11.  PRIZES

      11.1  A Prize Giving Ceremony is scheduled at 1630EDT, Tuesday, July 27, 2010.  Yachts still racing at 1000EDT on that date should terminate racing and come to Boothbay Harbor as soon as possible. 

      11.2  Class prizes will be awarded for up to the first three places on corrected time in each class, depending on the number of yachts in that class.  No class will be started with less than five entries.

      11.3  The following Division Trophies will be awarded for first place in Division on  corrected time: 

            ORR Racer

            ORR Racer-Cruiser

            PHRF Racer

            PHRF Cruiser

            Double-Handed

            Family Sailboat, crew consisting of 50% or more members of one family

            Ancient Mariner’s trophy, to most senior skipper competing
